Silver Jewelry Knowledge / 6 Must-Know Facts Before You Buy

️⃣Why isn’t silver jewelry sold by weight (“gram”)? This is the key point!Silver jewelry price = Value of silver material + Value of craftsmanship. ▪️Material Value: This is the international silver price, which is quite low (often called the “spot price”). ▪️Craftsmanship Value: This is the major cost! Design, carving, setting (crystals, zirconia, enamel), polishing, plating, and other intricate craftsmanship add artistic and aesthetic value that can’t be measured by weight. Summary: When buying silver jewelry, you’re paying for the design and artistry, not investing in a silver bar!

️⃣ Why does silver jewelry turn black under lights or when stored? This is due to silver’s chemical properties and is completely normal! ▪️Science Behind It: Silver (Ag) reacts with substances in the air like hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂), forming silver sulfide (Ag₂S), a dull black film. ▪️Light/Heat Acceleration: Heat and humidity accelerate this oxidation process. So, prolonged exposure to store display lights or wearing it while sweating can cause it to tarnish faster. ⚠️Note: People with different body pH levels or who sweat more might see faster tarnishing, but this does NOT mean your body is toxic; it’s just a normal chemical reaction.

️⃣ How to tell the purity of silver? Look for the stamp! Not everything silver-colored is pure silver! Always check for these marks: ▪️S925: The most common type. It means 92.5% silver, mixed with 7.5% other metals (usually copper) for increased durability and less bending. Ideal for intricate and fashionable designs. ▪️S990 / Pure Silver: 99% silver content. Softer metal, best for simple designs like plain bracelets or baby bracelets. ▪️S999: Millennial Silver, 99.9% silver content. Softer still and can scratch easily. 🔍Look for the “S” stamp – items without it are likely not silver.

️⃣ What to do if silver tarnishes? Easy renewal methods! Don’t worry, you can fix it at home easily: ▪️Silver Polishing Cloth: For light tarnish. Just wipe and it shines. (Note: These cloths contain chemicals, don’t wash them). ▪️Toothpaste: Put a small amount of toothpaste (non-gel, non-whitening) on a soft-bristled toothbrush, add a little water, gently scrub, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a soft cloth. ▪️Silver Dip: Dip for a few seconds, then rinse well with water and dry. Very effective but slightly abrasive/corrosive. Use only for heavy tarnish. ▪️ Lazy Method: Place jewelry in a bowl lined with aluminum foil. Add salt and hot water. Soak for a few minutes – it will become shiny again! (Science: The aluminum and salt create an electrolyte solution that causes the sulfur to transfer from the silver to the aluminum).

️⃣ Why does some silver tarnish quickly, while others don’t? It depends on the surface treatment: ▪️Bare Silver: Refers to S925 silver without any plating, exposed directly to air. It oxidizes and tarnishes most easily. ▪Rhodium Plated: A layer of rhodium (a metal in the platinum family) is plated onto the silver. This provides a bright, hard, and tarnish-resistant surface, keeping it shiny. However, the plating can wear off over time, exposing the silver beneath which can then tarnish. ▪️Thai Silver/Tibetan Silver: These are often antique-style alloys with a darkened, oxidized finish intentionally applied, so new tarnish isn’t noticeable.

️⃣ Can you wear silver jewelry in the shower or swimming pool? Not recommended! ▪️Showering: Chemicals in shampoo, conditioner, and body wash can accelerate tarnishing and damage any plating. ▪️Swimming: Chlorine in pools is particularly bad for silver, causing severe corrosion and rapid discoloration that can be difficult to reverse. 🌟Best Practice: After wearing, gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove moisture and oils. Store it in an airtight bag or jewelry box to minimize exposure to air – this is the best way to care for it.
